Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District hires fire chief
The Daily Herald recently published several articles highlighting the formation of the new Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District, a development that has sparked both interest and debate in the local community. One article focused on the appointment of Greg Benson as the district’s first fire chief, marking a major milestone in its transition from a paper entity to a fully operational emergency services provider.
According to the report, Benson was already involved with the district as a technical adviser, helping oversee the selection of fire equipment and the bidding process for emergency services. His role led to the hiring of American Emergency Services (AES), a local company based in Wheaton, to provide fire and ambulance services. Although Benson will be an employee of AES, he is expected to play a key leadership role in guiding the district's future operations.
The Daily Herald also ran an editorial titled *Fire District Heads Down Risky Path*, which questioned the decision of the district’s board to cut ties with the City of St. Charles. The article argued that by treating the situation like a business deal rather than a public service commitment, the district may be setting itself up for long-term challenges. Currently, the district has no physical assets or personnel, relying entirely on contracts with external providers. Now, it aims to build two stations, hire a chief, and take full control of its services — a move that could prove costly if not managed carefully.
Another recent piece featured Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, who called for the fire district’s board members to be elected rather than appointed. She suggested that the city’s loss of the contract might have been due to internal mismanagement, and that the current structure gives too much power to appointed officials. McConnaughay, who appoints four of the five trustees, acknowledged her influence but pointed out that the district’s president was chosen by the mayor.
In addition, the Kane County Chronicle covered the appointment of Benson, noting that he brings extensive experience from fire departments in St. Charles, Aurora, Batavia, and Elgin. As a former battalion chief, he was selected from over 50 applicants after a thorough vetting process conducted by AES, along with input from the district’s trustees and citizen advisory committee.
