**2XZ Series Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump**
**Construction:**
The 2XZ series rotary vane vacuum pump is a two-stage, high-speed, direct-drive rotary vane pump. It operates on the same principle as the 2X type pump. Inside the cylindrical stator housing, the rotor is eccentrically mounted, and vanes are fitted freely into slots on the rotor. When the rotor rotates at high speed, the vanes are pushed outward by centrifugal force and spring force, maintaining close contact with the inner wall of the stator throughout the rotation. This creates a seal between the inlet and outlet ports. As the rotor turns, the volume near the inlet increases, drawing in gas, while the volume near the outlet decreases, compressing the gas. The compressed gas is then expelled through the exhaust valve when the pressure inside exceeds the atmospheric pressure. This process creates a vacuum on the intake side. Figure 1 illustrates the working principle of a single-stage pump. A double-stage pump consists of two single-stage pumps connected in series. At higher intake pressures, both stages can evacuate simultaneously, but at lower pressures, the gas is first expelled from the first stage to the second before being released to the atmosphere.
The 2XZ pump is equipped with a gas ballast valve. Its main function is to introduce a controlled amount of air into the exhaust chamber when open, reducing the partial pressure of vapor in the discharge gas. This helps prevent condensation of vapor within the oil, which could otherwise reduce the pump’s efficiency and damage internal components. However, using the gas ballast valve reduces the ultimate vacuum level and may cause the pump temperature to rise.
The 2XZ series is known for its compact size, lightweight design, quiet operation, and ease of starting. Additional features include mechanisms to prevent oil backflow and oil leakage from the shaft seal, ensuring a cleaner and more reliable performance.
**Applications:**
This pump is widely used in various industries, including electro-vacuum technology, vacuum flask manufacturing, vacuum welding, and as an auxiliary device for precision gauges that require a vacuum environment. It can be used as a main pump or as a fore pump for diffusion or molecular pumps. It is particularly suitable for laboratory settings due to its small size, low weight, and quiet operation.
The pump is designed to operate continuously under ambient temperatures ranging from 5°C to 40°C, with an intake pressure below 1230 Pa. If the gas contains moisture with a relative humidity above 90%, the gas ballast valve should be opened. However, the pump must not run for more than one minute when the inlet port is fully exposed to the atmosphere. It is not recommended for pumping oxidized, toxic, explosive, or corrosive gases, nor gases that react chemically with the pump oil or contain dust particles.
