Matteson house fire 7-4-11
The Matteson Fire Department responded to a house fire early this morning at 946 Princeton Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames coming from the second floor of the two-story home. At the time, local units were already engaged on other calls, prompting an immediate request for mutual aid. The incident was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm, with multiple departments responding to the scene.
Fire companies from Matteson, Frankfort, Tinley Park, Park Forest, Flossmoor, Richton Park, Crete FPD, Chicago Heights, Oak Forest, and Country Club Hills arrived to assist. The fire had spread rapidly, forcing crews to work quickly to control the situation.
Karl Klotz captured several compelling images of the incident, offering a detailed visual account of the fire's intensity and the response efforts. His photos show the flames roaring through the roof as crews worked to ventilate the structure and deploy a master stream.
One of Karl’s images features Frankfort Ladder 729, a 2008 Pierce Arrow XT 75' quint, positioned in the 'A' sector. Another shot highlights the same ladder as it deployed a high-velocity water stream from the front of the building. Matteson Engine 6, a 2010 Pierce Velocity, was also on scene, working alongside Frankfort units.
Flossmoor Engine 1340, an HME/Central, was staged nearby, while Park Forest Engine 56, an HME/Saulsbury, was also seen waiting in position. Tinley Park Truck 204, the third truck on the scene, was quickly put to work without needing to use its apparatus.
An image of the operations chief discussing strategy with firefighters shows the careful planning involved in entering the structure. Meanwhile, another photo captures the aerial ladder from Frankfort being used for an elevated master stream, with Matteson’s tower ladder visible in the background.
The fire had vented itself, eliminating the need for rooftop ventilation. Despite the challenges, crews managed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Karl has compiled a gallery of 90 images from the event, which can be viewed here.
