Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator launches fourth class of startups
The Techstars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator has officially launched its fourth class of startups, marking a significant milestone for the program. This year's cohort is the largest yet, with 12 companies joining from nine U.S. states and Latvia. The new group will participate in a rigorous 13-week mentorship program based in Birmingham, continuing the accelerator’s mission to support innovation in energy, clean tech, and climate solutions.
Since its founding in 2020, the program has grown rapidly, welcoming a total of 42 startups across three years. Under the leadership of previous managing director Nate Schmidt and program manager Brooke Gillis, the accelerator helped create over 200 jobs, with 32 remaining in Alabama. Current leaders Matthew Jaeh and Rae’Mah Henderson are now tasked with building on that momentum.
“We’re excited to continue the great work that Nate and Brooke started,†said Jaeh. “The startups selected for the program are among the top 1% of applicants globally. Many have chosen Alabama as their home, and we want to keep growing the future of energy right here.â€
Among this year’s participants are innovative companies like Ai-Ops, which develops AI-powered industrial control systems; BlueTanks, helping EV drivers find the best charging stations; and EarthABC, offering a platform for businesses to achieve sustainability quickly. Other standout startups include EV Safe Charge, Grid Discovery, Infranergy, and SplitEV, each tackling different aspects of the energy transition.
The accelerator is supported by major local partners such as Alabama Power, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, and the University of Alabama. As part of the global Techstars network, it continues to invest in early-stage startups, aiming to support more than 600 companies in 2023 alone.
This year’s class represents not only growth in numbers but also diversity in backgrounds and ideas, reinforcing Alabama’s role as a hub for energy innovation. With continued support and mentorship, these startups are well-positioned to make an impact both locally and globally.
