Major coal chemical project progress
In August 2004, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the start of the Shenhua Group's Erdos direct liquefaction project with a design capacity of 5 million tons of refined oil per year. The plan is to start production in 2007.
In February 2006, the first domestic coal-to-oil conversion plant with complete independent intellectual property rights in China, the Shanxi Xiao'an Coal-based Synthetic Oil Demonstration Plant, was groundbreaking. The demonstration plant is indirect liquefaction, with an annual output of 160,000 tons of oil products. It is expected to be completed and put into production in 2008. In the future planning, Zhaoan will start construction of an industrialized plant with an annual output of 2.6 million tons of oil products in 2008 and put into operation during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, followed by the construction of the second-phase project, reaching 5.2 million tons by 2015 Oil equivalent production scale.
In 2006, Inner Mongolia Yitai Group started the construction of a 160,000-ton/year coal-to-oil project using Shanxi Coal Chemical Technology, and invested more than 500 million yuan.
In April 2006, Yankuang Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for the coal-to-oil project in Yulin, Shaanxi Province. The project will use the indirect liquefied coal-to-oil technology independently developed by the Yankuang Group. The preliminary demonstration project will have a scale of 1 million tons of oil. It will be completed within one year and it plans to build a production scale of 5 million tons of oil by 2013.
In February 2006, the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shenhua Ningxia Coal Group and Shell (China) Co., Ltd. signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the cooperation of Ningdong Coal Indirect Liquefaction Project. At the same time, South Africa SASOL is also cooperating with Shenhua Ningxia Coal Group to conduct a pre-feasibility study on 3 million tons of coal-based oil production in Shaanxi and Ningxia. If it goes well, the Shaanxi and Ningxia coal-to-oil projects will start construction in 2008.
In 2005, the construction of 400,000 tons/year of dimethyl ether project in Ordos Group was started.
Construction and proposed coal chemical projects
There are 30 coal chemical projects under construction with a total investment of approximately RMB 86.9 billion, an additional production capacity of approximately 9 million tons of methanol (including 4 million tons of methanol for commercial use), 900,000 tons of dimethyl ether, and 980,000 tons of coal-based olefins. Synthetic oil 1.26 million tons. This batch of projects is expected to be completed and put into production by 2010.
The new capacity of coal chemical projects approved or filed by the provinces is about 35 million tons of methanol (including 12,600 tons of methanol for commodities), 8.73 million tons of dimethyl ether, 2.95 million tons of coal-based olefins, and 2.95 million tons of coal-based synthetic oil. It is uncertain when the project will be completed.
The planned project planning capacity is 38.1 million tons of methanol, 13.2 million tons of dimethyl ether, 5.4 million tons of olefins, and 12.7 million tons of synthetic oil.
