China's first continuous pipe working machine was successfully developed
The Science and Technology Management Department of the Group Company recently learned that the continuous pipe working machine developed by the Jianghan Machinery Research Institute under the China National Petroleum Corporation's Drilling Engineering Technology Research Institute has successfully completed on-site industrial testing across six wells in the Dagang Oilfield. This achievement marks a significant milestone, representing China's first self-developed continuous pipe technology system. The successful development of this equipment, which is based on intellectual property rights, represents a major breakthrough for the National 863 Program’s key project “Continuous Pipe Technology and Equipment.â€
Continuous pipe technology is a cutting-edge method widely used in oil and gas exploration and production. Currently, over 1,000 units of continuous pipe equipment are in use globally for drilling, completion, logging, and workover operations—particularly in horizontal well applications. This technology offers unique advantages that traditional methods struggle to match. However, for many years, China has heavily relied on imported continuous pipe equipment and supporting tools, which has hindered the widespread application of this technology within the country.
To address this challenge, the Ministry of Science and Technology initiated a rigorous evaluation process and included “Continuous Pipe Technology and Equipment†as a core topic under the “Advanced Drilling Technology and Equipment†program of the National 863 Plan. The development of the “continuous pipe work machine†was specifically designated as a primary research target under the group company’s major equipment development project, “Development of Pipeline Workover Equipment and Tools.â€
The results from the on-site industrial tests have demonstrated that the continuous pipe working machine performed exceptionally well under harsh conditions such as muddy roads, proving its off-road capability and transport efficiency. The equipment can be installed and dismantled quickly, with all components operating smoothly and reliably. The instrument display is stable and accurate, and the overall handling performance of the machine meets on-site construction requirements. The machine's performance has reached international advanced standards, marking a major step forward in China's domestic oilfield technology capabilities.
