Departure Angle

The departure angle is the maximum angle between the horizontal plane and the plane that cuts through the outer edge of the last wheel of a vehicle under static load. This angle is critical because any rigid part of the vehicle located behind the rear wheels must not extend below this plane.

Unlike the approach angle, which is important when ascending, the departure angle becomes crucial when driving downhill. As the vehicle moves down a slope, the front wheels may have already reached flat ground, while the rear wheels are still on the incline. In such situations, the rear bumper or other parts of the vehicle could potentially get stuck if the departure angle is too small.

A higher departure angle means the vehicle can descend steeper slopes without the risk of the rear bumper scraping or getting caught on the terrain. This makes it an essential measurement for off-road vehicles, especially those designed for rugged environments where steep descents are common.

Understanding and optimizing the departure angle helps ensure better clearance and reduces the chances of damage to the vehicle's undercarriage during challenging terrain navigation. Whether you're driving on trails, in the mountains, or over rocky surfaces, a good departure angle contributes significantly to the vehicle’s performance and safety.
