Elgin FD awards ceremony

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

On Tuesday evening, the Elgin Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating the bravery and dedication of dozens of individuals who made a difference in their community. This was the first formal event of its kind in over a decade, thanks to the efforts of a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, as reported by Fire Chief John Fahy.

The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of documents detailing the actions of the fire department, which handles up to 12,000 emergency calls annually. Fahy praised those honored, saying, "Many of them went above and beyond their call of duty. They did that extra thing to make it right."

Among the honorees was 11-year-old Nathan Pagnoni, who quickly alerted his grandmother when he discovered a garage fire. “I was really scared,” Nathan said, but he felt proud when he got to meet the firefighters at the ceremony. “It was really cool to get up there and take photos with them.”

Dawn Stoner, a project manager from Advocate Sherman Hospital, played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies at the hospital’s Center Street location.

A father-and-son team, Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush, were recognized for helping put out a kitchen fire and later organizing a fundraiser for the affected family.

Nurse Angela Flintz used an automated external defibrillator on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Andrew J. Robinson helped control a small fire using a garden hose, while Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra from Burlington Coat Factory swiftly responded to a clothing rack fire in their store.

Several firefighters received the department’s first-ever Phoenix Awards for saving lives during full cardiorespiratory arrests. One team saved a man who overdosed on heroin, while another team revived a man who stopped breathing at a nursing home.

Two company awards were given to teams that performed life-saving procedures, including an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim and a successful resuscitation of an infant who was choking.

Two Meijer employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood, were honored posthumously for performing CPR and using an AED on someone who suffered cardiac arrest, even though they couldn’t attend the ceremony.

The department also recognized its active shooter and strategic planning committees with unit citations. Additionally, 28 members of the department—out of 133 total—were acknowledged for their service in the U.S. military.

Thanks Dan
