Elgin FD awards ceremony

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

On Tuesday evening, the Elgin Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating the bravery and dedication of dozens of individuals who went above and beyond in their roles. From an 11-year-old boy who spotted a fire and alerted his family to firefighters who performed life-saving procedures on the scene, the event highlighted remarkable acts of courage.

This was the first formal recognition ceremony in over a decade, made possible by the efforts of a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, according to Fire Chief John Fahy. The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of documents detailing the department's response to up to 12,000 calls annually. "Many of these honorees did that extra thing to make it right," Fahy said, emphasizing the exceptional contributions of those recognized.

Nathan Pagnoni, an 11-year-old, received the Fire Chief’s Citizens Award for quickly alerting his grandmother to a garage fire. “I was really scared,” Nathan recalled, but he felt proud when he got to meet the firefighters and take photos with them at the ceremony.

Dawn Stoner of Advocate Sherman Hospital played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies at the hospital’s Center Street location. Meanwhile, the father-and-son team of Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush were honored for helping put out a kitchen fire and organizing a fundraiser for the affected family.

Nurse Angela Flintz used an automated external defibrillator on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Andrew J. Robinson helped control a small fire using a garden hose, while Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra from Burlington Coat Factory responded swiftly to a clothing rack fire.

Several firefighters were awarded the department’s first Phoenix Awards for saving lives during full cardiorespiratory arrest. One team saved a man who overdosed on heroin, while another team revived a man who had stopped breathing at a nursing home.

A team received a company award for performing an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim, and another for saving an infant who was choking. Two Meijer employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood, were honored posthumously for performing CPR and using an AED on someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

The department also recognized the active shooter and strategic planning committees with unit citations. Additionally, 28 members of the Elgin Fire Department—out of a total of 133—were acknowledged for their service in the U.S. military.

Thanks, Dan.
