Maomao's transformation extraction tower energy-saving 3 million
Recently, Maoming Petrochemical Company successfully put into operation its 1 million-ton-per-year ethylene refined aromatic extraction tower, marking a significant step in optimizing production processes. The improved system has resulted in annual energy savings exceeding 3 million yuan, demonstrating the effectiveness of the company's operational upgrades.
Originally, the aromatics extraction tower was designed for the rectification and separation of xylene products. However, after adjustments in the production process, the tower was repurposed to separate toluene, with minimal changes to the tower structure. As a result, the original design parameters—such as tower pressure, temperature, feed rate, heating amount, and reflux ratio—no longer matched the new operational requirements. This mismatch posed challenges in maintaining stable and high-quality operations.
To address these issues, the company established a dedicated research team to analyze the problem and develop effective solutions. One key challenge was the high steam consumption at the bottom of the tower during toluene separation, which led to excessive energy use. To tackle this, the team implemented a strategy to reduce the reflux flow at the top of the tower. This adjustment not only lowered the demand for high-pressure steam at the bottom but also helped maintain the overall temperature profile of the tower.
After the optimization, the top reflux was reduced from 16 tons per hour to 10 tons per hour, while the bottom heating capacity decreased from 4.5 tons per hour to 3 tons per hour. Despite these changes, the tower’s temperature remained stable, ensuring consistent product quality. The transformation also led to daily savings of 36 tons of high-pressure steam, along with reduced power consumption for the top return pump and lower cooling water usage for the tower cooler.
The energy-saving effect of this project is impressive, with daily savings reaching over 9,700 yuan. This achievement highlights the company’s commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and sustainable development in its refining operations.
