Army private receives welcome home
Last week, the community of Vernon Hills came together to celebrate the return of one of their own. U.S. Army Private Andrew Perez, a 2006 graduate of Vernon Hills High School, was welcomed home with open arms after serving nearly a year with the 37th Infantry Battalion near Al Saad, Iraq. He’s now back stateside, just in time to enjoy some well-deserved rest.
The homecoming began with a grand gesture involving local law enforcement and firefighting teams. The Vernon Hills Police Department, along with the Countryside and Lincolnshire/Riverwoods Fire Protection Districts, organized a special escort to celebrate his arrival. As the convoy made its way through Vernon Hills, residents lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the decorated soldier. Aerials from Countryside and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods even flew overhead, holding a massive flag above Deerpath Road, adding a touch of patriotism to the event.
Perez, 23, was met with a warm reception that included not only heartfelt cheers but also official recognition. During the ceremony held in his honor, the village presented him with a proclamation. Local businesses, such as Olive Garden and the Westfield Hawthorn shopping center, generously offered gift cards as tokens of gratitude for his service.
