Large-scale environmental protection equipment needs a breakthrough

<

China's environmental protection machinery and equipment industry has made significant progress in areas such as atmospheric treatment, urban sewage management, industrial wastewater treatment, and solid waste processing. However, compared to the advanced levels of foreign counterparts, China still lags behind in large-scale environmental equipment development. Guo Baolin, vice president of the China Environmental Protection Machinery Industry Association, pointed out that while the industry is growing, its technological capabilities remain limited, especially in terms of independent innovation and institutional support. He emphasized that the biggest challenge in localizing key environmental technologies lies not in manufacturing itself, but in the lack of advanced process equipment and modern concepts. For example, in many developed countries, wastewater treatment is seen as a resource, with integrated systems that are far more advanced than what exists in China. This gap contributes to a 10–15 year lag in the overall development of China’s environmental machinery sector. Despite these challenges, experts believe there is huge potential for growth in the industry, especially with government policies supporting sustainable development. The State Council’s "Decision on Implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development and Strengthening Environmental Protection," issued in 2005, outlined a long-term plan to improve environmental quality, focusing on water safety, pollution control, and air quality improvement. This policy framework signals a clear direction for the future of environmental machinery manufacturing. Guo also highlighted the need for China to focus on developing high-value, independently owned environmental technologies. Currently, key components like flue gas desulfurization systems for large power plants are still heavily reliant on foreign technology, which limits both cost efficiency and national technological independence. By improving R&D capabilities and promoting domestic innovation, China can reduce dependency and enhance competitiveness. Industry insiders suggest that by investing in research, fostering collaboration between enterprises, universities, and research institutions, and supporting small and medium-sized tech enterprises, China can accelerate its transition toward a more efficient and innovative environmental protection industry. With the right strategies, the sector has the potential to become a major driver of economic and environmental progress in the coming years.
