On September 29, Toyota Motor Corp announced the recall of 3.8 million vehicles in the US market. The reason for the recall is that the movable floor mat in the car may jam the throttle and cause a traffic accident. This recall is the largest recall of Toyota's history in the US market.
It is reported that Toyota’s recall involves the best-selling models in the US market such as Camry and Prius. Toyota said that the company is still negotiating with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States to resolve this issue. Vehicle owners who have hidden troubles will receive a recall notice as soon as next week.
Toyota spokesman Irv Miller suggested that before the company finds a solution to the problem, the owner should remove the removable floor mat on the driver's seat side.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that it has received 102 reports of accidents caused by stuck Toyota throttle. However, it is unclear how many times it caused a crash. Toyota also declined to disclose how many complaints were received.
Toyota’s last major recall in the United States occurred in 2005 when Toyota recalled 900,000 problem vehicles due to steering gear problems.
As to whether Toyota's recall of the US affects the Chinese market, Toyota China spokesman Niu Hao on September 30th, if Toyota’s recall of the United States is limited to the problem of floor mats, it will have no effect on the sales of vehicles in the Chinese market. However, if the reason for the recall involves other parts, Toyota China said it is further confirmation.
