ABC7 recently featured an article on the fascinating firefighting research happening at Underwriter's Laboratories in Northbrook. The focus is on groundbreaking efforts aimed at saving both lives and property from devastating house fires.

Most house fires are incredibly rapid and intense, giving you roughly three minutes to evacuate safely after the alarm sounds. In response, a local Chicago lab is pioneering new techniques to combat these blazes more effectively.

This initiative represents a novel approach in firefighting science, with the primary aim of extinguishing fires more swiftly than ever before. “We’re standing in what resembles a home—no furnishings, no decorations,” explained John Drengenberg, consumer safety director at Underwriters Laboratories. Known for safeguarding consumers, the organization is conducting this study in a specially constructed warehouse in Northbrook. Experts and firefighters from all over the nation are participating in this endeavor.

Within just 45 seconds of igniting the fire, thick clouds of smoke began billowing through the roof. By two minutes, flames erupted as the roof was engulfed. The fire raged for half an hour, reaching scorching temperatures of 500 degrees. Firefighters here are diligently working out the most efficient methods to suppress such infernos.

“It’s not as straightforward as simply applying water here or using a specific nozzle type. It’s about comprehending how fires spread and employing various suppression strategies simultaneously,” said Steve Kerber, director of the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute.

They’re meticulously analyzing the optimal ways to deploy water and pinpointing the precise locations for spraying it. For this particular experiment, they initiated the house fire in the attic. “We’re noticing an uptick in attic fires due to the insulation added to exterior walls. These external fires often spread upward into attics, alongside issues like lightning strikes and electrical malfunctions,” Kerber noted.

Unfortunately, the window of opportunity to escape has drastically shrunk. What once allowed 17 minutes to flee after an alarm has now reduced to a mere 3-4 minutes. This change is largely attributed to modern synthetic materials like cushions, furniture, and construction elements, which fuel fires to burn quicker and hotter.

Fire prevention specialists emphasize the importance of regular maintenance for electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, and chimneys. Additionally, inspecting these areas of your home before moving in can be crucial. “Where exactly is the heat source? What are the risks for firefighters and residents alike?” asked Drengenberg.

The comprehensive findings from this firefighting research may take several months to finalize, but Underwriters Laboratories plans to distribute the results nationwide to fire departments across the country.
