Where are they now … Homewood
Dennis McGuire, Jr. shared that Homewood Squad 546 has been sold to the Auburn Fire Department in New York. This marks a new chapter for the 1989 Pemfab T-942/3D heavy rescue unit, which was originally delivered to Homewood, Illinois, and served there for many years. The vehicle is now part of Auburn’s fleet, continuing its legacy of emergency response.
The photo above shows the unit as it currently appears with the Auburn Fire Department, featuring its updated markings and color scheme. It's always interesting to see how these fire apparatuses transition between departments, often retaining their original design while adapting to new needs.
In this second image, we can see the original paint scheme of Homewood Squad 546 when it was first delivered in 1989. The contrast between the past and present is striking, highlighting how these vehicles evolve over time. The photo was taken by Larry Shapiro and captures the unit in its early years, before it was re-painted or modified.
These kinds of updates are important for fire history enthusiasts and collectors, as they help track the journey of each piece of equipment. It's also a reminder of the long service these units provide across different communities.
