Fingerprinting product prices will fall sharply in 2006

<

In December 2005, a U.S.-based research institute named "TRIANGLE PARK" released survey data indicating that Lenovo was on track to sell its one-millionth fingerprint-enabled laptop in January 2006, marking it as the world’s largest seller of such devices. Although Lenovo isn't a dedicated fingerprint reader manufacturer, many ThinkPad users didn’t prioritize fingerprint recognition when purchasing their laptops. However, Lenovo’s achievement was a major milestone for fingerprint technology providers and the broader biometric industry. As a result, many fingerprint recognition companies placed high expectations on 2006, planning to increase market investments and launch more competitively priced products to drive growth in the fingerprint identification sector. Microsoft also made a notable move by reducing the retail price of its fingerprint and mouse set to 699 yuan, a drop of over one-third compared to prices exceeding 1,000 yuan at the start of 2005. At the end of 2005, the average shipment price of AuthenTec's sliding fingerprint sensors dropped to about $5 per unit. According to AuthenTec, further price reductions are expected in the future, though specific figures have not been announced yet. Domestic vendors were equally optimistic about the 2006 market. For instance, Shenzhen Aallot Company reduced the average price of its fingerprint products by more than 20% in 2006, with its new standard fingerprint USB drive priced at 399 yuan (256MB capacity). According to ALERT, 2005 was the year of concept development for fingerprint recognition, while 2006 marked the real start of the market. With numerous price cuts across fingerprint products, the market was poised for rapid expansion. HowNet Technology, a leading Taiwanese company in fingerprint recognition, reported that eight IC design firms in Taiwan had already begun investing in the development of fingerprint control chips, showing strong confidence in the 2006 market. Another leading company in the fingerprint access control market, based in Hangzhou, announced plans to introduce a range of low-cost fingerprint identification products in 2006, some of which might reach the lowest price points in the market. Many domestic and international manufacturers were making significant efforts in 2006, signaling a growing interest in the fingerprint recognition sector. Why was 2006 so important? According to General Manager Shao Yu of Aliot, two main factors contributed to this shift. First, the market was maturing after companies like Lenovo entered the space, making the future of fingerprint notebooks and mobile phones clearer. Second, upstream manufacturers significantly reduced the cost of fingerprint sensors, making these products more accessible to the average consumer. This trend is similar to how Lenovo once sparked an LCD revolution due to a sharp decline in panel prices. As a tech product, the adoption speed of fingerprint recognition is closely tied to technological advancements. From February to March 2006, after the Spring Festival, market demand for fingerprint products saw a noticeable rise, with a much broader customer base than before. Unlike the past, when the focus was mainly on government, military, and financial sectors, the understanding of fingerprint technology among customers had deepened significantly. Now, discussions often began directly with products and applications rather than technical explanations, indicating that the market was entering a period of rapid growth.
