Shanghai's car exhaust gas purifier production line passed the acceptance test
The first domestic automobile exhaust gas purifier production line, developed by Shanghai, has successfully passed the expert evaluation hosted by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. This milestone marks a significant step forward in China's efforts to reduce urban air pollution through advanced environmental technology.
According to a report from *Xinmin Evening News* on the 13th, vehicle exhaust emissions are one of the primary sources of air pollution in modern cities. To tackle this issue, it is essential to eliminate the "black tail" — the harmful emissions from vehicles. This is mainly achieved by installing three-way catalytic converters, which use catalysts to transform toxic gases into less harmful substances before they are released into the atmosphere.
Currently, China requires nearly 20 million sets of various types of exhaust gas purifiers annually. However, due to a lack of domestic technological capabilities and production equipment, most of these purifiers are imported directly from abroad, or the production equipment itself is sourced from overseas. The cost of importing a complete production line can reach as high as 45 million yuan, significantly increasing manufacturing costs for local enterprises.
In 2003, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission launched a key project aimed at developing core technologies and equipment for the automated production of bundled three-way catalytic converters. This initiative was carried out under an industry-university collaboration model, with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai Lianeng Electromechanical Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Fojiya Honghu Exhaust System Co., Ltd. working together. The project combined technical research, joint manufacturing, and practical application to drive innovation.
Professor Liu Chengliang from the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University explained that the production line consists of eight major units and integrates more than 20 processes involving hundreds of actions. Despite its complexity, the total development cost was only 5 million yuan, and the trial unit has already generated over 30 million yuan in output value. This achievement not only reduces reliance on foreign technology but also paves the way for sustainable growth in the environmental protection industry.
