Summarize the Achievements and Experiences of the Tenth Five-Year Plan and Objectives of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan The National Chemical Science and Technology Conference was held in Beijing
On October 19th, over 400 representatives from chemical companies, research institutes, and academic institutions across China gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for the National Chemical Science and Technology Conference, organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. The event focused on reviewing achievements made during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period and outlining goals for the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" in chemical science and technology. Attendees discussed key challenges, future strategies, and major tasks to drive innovation and development in the industry.
Gu Xiulian, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, delivered an important speech, highlighting the progress achieved in the chemical sector and urging scientists and engineers to prioritize independent innovation. She emphasized the importance of addressing key technological bottlenecks, accelerating industrialization, and enhancing international cooperation to support the industry’s sustainable growth. Tan Zhuzhou, Honorary President of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, presided over the opening ceremony, while Li Yongwu, the association’s president, gave a keynote address detailing the achievements and future directions of chemical science and technology.
Li Yongwu outlined significant progress in the chemical industry over the past decade, including breakthroughs in key technologies, successful adoption of advanced methods, and the promotion of innovative solutions. During the Tenth Five-Year Plan, more than 2,000 scientific achievements were realized, with 144 receiving National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 16 winning National Invention Awards. He emphasized four major areas of advancement: breakthroughs in critical technologies, the development of new processes, the creation of proprietary technologies, and the improvement of large-scale chemical equipment. Looking ahead, the goal is to achieve a 60% contribution rate from science and technology by 2010, with increased investment in R&D and enhanced innovation capabilities.
The conference also recognized outstanding individuals and teams, awarding 170 delegates the title of "National Outstanding Scientific and Technical Workers in Chemical Industry." Additionally, 11 projects received the 2005 Association Technical Invention Award, and 124 projects were honored with the 2005 Association Scientific and Technological Progress Award. Fifteen enterprises were named "China Chemical Industry Model Innovation Enterprises."
Representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission shared insights on national science and technology strategies and innovation policies for the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Leading companies such as Yantai Wanhua presented their unique approaches to technological innovation. The China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association also announced plans for promoting the "China Top Brand" initiative and advancing circular economy practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of the chemical industry.
