Flyability launches Inspector 3.0
April 20, 2021—Flyability, a pioneer in remote inspection solutions, has just released Inspector 3.0, a groundbreaking software tool that makes it easier than ever for inspectors to pinpoint the exact locations of defects found during inspections. This marks a significant leap forward in how inspections are conducted, especially in challenging environments where traditional methods fall short.
Flyability, known for its innovative approach to making dangerous jobs safer, is thrilled to introduce this new software, which works seamlessly with the Elios 2 drone. After a successful beta phase involving over 150 users, Inspector 3.0 is now available to all Elios 2 users. The software transforms the way inspectors operate by providing precise location data, eliminating the guesswork associated with indoor inspections.
Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability, shared his excitement about the release: "Inspector 3.0 is a major milestone in our mission to eliminate the need for human entry into hazardous confined spaces. By accurately mapping inspection data within assets, we're empowering inspectors to work more efficiently and enabling businesses to leverage inspection outcomes more effectively."
Traditionally, inspectors performing manual checks can easily identify the location of a defect since they’re physically present when they spot it. However, using advanced Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) tools like the Elios 2 introduces challenges due to the absence of indoor positioning systems like GPS. Without precise location data, inspectors often rely on a combination of barometric readings, maps, blueprints, and visual cues in videos to determine the defect's actual position within an asset.
With Inspector 3.0, this complexity is significantly reduced. The software generates a sparse point cloud that shows inspectors exactly where each defect is located within the asset, utilizing data already collected by the Elios 2. This process doesn’t require expensive technologies such as LiDAR or time-consuming photogrammetry software.
Simon Kumm, a confined space inspection expert at InspecDrone GmbH, praised the new tool: "Previously, we might know there’s damage somewhere inside an asset but struggle to identify the exact spot. Inspector 3.0 solves this issue beautifully."
Accurate location data plays a critical role in maintenance operations. Imagine needing to excavate ten feet of soil to fix a pipe in a wastewater system—if you don’t have the right coordinates, you could end up digging in the wrong place entirely. Location data is equally vital for coordinating efforts among various teams involved in maintenance. Scaffolders need to understand defect locations to plan proper setups, while repair crews benefit from having a clear overview of all issues along with their spatial context.
Thibault Chatillon, Innovation and Development Manager at Setec, echoed similar sentiments: "The localization capability in Inspector 3.0 was something our clients had been asking for. Now, I can confidently tell them that this feature is finally here."
