Rolling Meadows firefighters assist young burn victim
The Daily Herald recently featured an inspiring story about Rolling Meadows firefighters going above and beyond to bring comfort to a young burn victim. Last month, Rolling Meadows firefighter Rick Acosta paid a visit to La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago and was delighted to see an iPad charging beside a young patient's bed. This brought him relief, knowing that 8-year-old Adorian Fentry of Rolling Meadows was making use of the device, which Acosta and fellow members of Rolling Meadows Firefighters Local 3075 had gifted him following an emergency situation in March.
Adorian had been sitting on a cocktail table in his living room when the candle atop it tipped over, igniting his clothing. The incident left him with severe second- and third-degree burns across 35% of his body, requiring extensive care and rehabilitation at La Rabida, located on Chicago's South Side. Due to the intensity of his treatment, Adorian could only see his family and classmates on weekends, leaving the boy feeling isolated. Realizing this, Acosta and the team decided to take action.
They raised funds among themselves and even received a contribution from their fire chief to buy two iPads. Their intention was for Adorian to connect with loved ones, teachers, and classmates via video calls using FaceTime and Skype. “It’s different when you’re dealing with kids in emergency situations; it hits you on a whole new emotional level,†Acosta explained. “Our union members were quick to contribute from their own pockets, and together we managed to make Adorian smile.â€
In May, a group of eight firefighters from Rolling Meadows visited La Rabida to surprise Adorian with their thoughtful present. Among them were four paramedics who had been part of the initial response team back in March. Recalling the moment, firefighter Colin Barr said, “His eyes sparkled when we walked in, and they practically lit up when we handed him the iPads.â€
Seeing Adorian so thrilled was rewarding enough, but what happened next truly moved the team. Adorian, despite being in a wheelchair, got up to personally thank each of them. Barr shared, “That night, we were impressed by how composed he stayed despite everything. After talking with him, we couldn’t help but admire his courage and determination—it was humbling.â€
This heartwarming act of kindness not only brightened Adorian’s day but also strengthened the bond between him and the firefighters who had come to his aid. It's a testament to the compassion and generosity of first responders who often go the extra mile to ensure those they serve feel supported.
