Seeo, based in Hayward, recently raised $17 million from investors, including Samsung. The company plans to begin shipping batteries for potential customers next year and evaluate them. Seeo's prototype is a solid-state battery, which means that the liquid electrolyte in traditional lithium-ion batteries will be replaced by solids. Solid electrolytes have many potential advantages. Seeo uses pure lithium, which can store more energy. Another challenge is that existing lithium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming cheaper and better. Tesla Motors and Panasonic's goal is to produce electric cars at a cost of $35,000 and have a 200-mile driving range.
