Skokie responds to man trapped under a car
This past week, Jeff Rudolph shared some photos from a callout in Skokie, along with a detailed account of what happened. Here's the story exactly as Jeff described it:
On August 30th at around 3 PM, there was a report of a child pinned under a vehicle in the 7700 block of Kilbourn Avenue. Skokie Fire Department quickly dispatched a full extrication team, which included two engine units, a ladder truck, the rescue squad, an ambulance, and the battalion chief. By the time they arrived, it turned out that it wasn’t a child but an adult male—though he was somewhat intoxicated. He had raised one side of his car using a jack and slid under it to fix his exhaust system. Unfortunately, he managed to wedge himself tightly under the car while trying to work on it. His friend, who was also under the influence, tried to help but only succeeded in making things worse.
When Squad 18 arrived on the scene, they stabilized the vehicle by placing chocks under the wheels and then used airbags to carefully lift the car enough to free him. After a bit of effort, they were finally able to pull him out without any serious injuries. Despite suffering only minor abrasions, the man declined medical transport and insisted his car’s exhaust still needed attention.
I’ve added some photos taken by Jeff Rudolph to give you a better idea of how the situation unfolded. You can see Skokie firefighters hard at work using airbags to lift the vehicle, ensuring everyone’s safety throughout the process. It’s impressive how they managed to resolve the issue efficiently while keeping everything under control.
