Solvay builds epichlorohydrin project in Thailand
The Investment Authority of Thailand announced in mid-February that Solvay will leverage glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel production, to manufacture epichlorohydrin in Thailand through its innovative Epicerol process. The company plans to construct a 100,000-ton-per-year facility in Mata, Thailand, with an expected start of operations in 2009. This plant is set to primarily serve Asian markets, supplying epichlorohydrin used in the production of epoxy resins. According to industry analyst Su Wei, China's annual demand for epichlorohydrin is growing at a rate exceeding 20%, highlighting the strong market potential in the region. Solvay has already tested the Epicerol technology at its French facility, where it successfully produced glycerol from soybean oil as part of the biodiesel process. This move underscores Solvay’s commitment to sustainable and efficient chemical production, utilizing waste streams to create high-value products. The project also aligns with Thailand’s broader efforts to attract green investments and boost its industrial capabilities in the chemical sector.
