Solvay builds epichlorohydrin project in Thailand
The Investment Authority of Thailand announced in mid-February that Solvay will utilize glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel production, to manufacture epichlorohydrin in Thailand through its innovative Epicerol process. The company plans to construct a 100,000-ton-per-year facility in Mata, Thailand, with an expected start of operations in 2009. This plant will primarily supply epichlorohydrin to Asian customers for the production of epoxy resins. According to Su Wei's projections, China's annual demand for epichlorohydrin is growing at a rate exceeding 20%, highlighting the strong market potential in the region. Solvay has already tested the Epicerol technology at a pilot plant in France, where it successfully produced glycerol from soybean oil as a by-product of biodiesel. This development marks a significant step toward sustainable and cost-effective production of key chemical intermediates. The project underscores Solvay’s commitment to innovation and its strategic focus on expanding its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging local resources and advanced technology, the company aims to meet the rising demand while reducing environmental impact. This move is expected to strengthen Solvay's position in the global chemical industry and support long-term economic growth in Thailand.
