It looks like there was quite an intense fire down on the South Side over the weekend. I got some messages from folks who were on the scene, including Jim Skrabel, who shared photos taken by his daughter Heather Garcia near the area where the fire broke out at 11661 S. Western Avenue. From what he described, it seemed to start in the attached garage before spreading into the main house. His photos show the severity of the situation, with heavy smoke billowing out and firefighters hard at work.
Then there's Dennis McGuire, Jr., who also sent in some shots. He mentioned that he only had his phone to capture the scene but still managed to get some good angles. According to him, the fire appeared to originate in the rear garage structure and quickly moved inside the house across both levels. Interestingly, he noted that Squad 5 was unavailable, which meant they had to call in an extra truck. His images really capture the intensity of the flames and the coordinated efforts of the firefighters.
I think it’s important to acknowledge how these situations bring communities together, especially when neighbors like Jim and Dennis step up to document things. It’s always tough to see places go up in smoke, but it’s inspiring to see how first responders handle emergencies like this. If anyone else has more details or additional photos, feel free to share! Let’s hope everyone involved is safe and sound.
