Testing the Elios 3 Surveying Payload: Mapping a Busy Road Bridge Without Halting Traffic
In late 2023, Flyability partnered with Droprise to put the Elios 3 and its innovative Surveying Payload to the test. Their mission? To conduct a detailed survey of a busy road bridge in Belgium—a structure that spans 600 meters and sees constant vehicle traffic. What made this project remarkable was that they managed to complete the survey without disrupting the flow of vehicles on the bridge.
The safety of the operation was a top priority. By using the Elios 3 and its advanced LiDAR capabilities, the team was able to capture data from hard-to-reach areas beneath the bridge. This eliminated the need for risky work-at-height operations, ensuring the safety of workers and motorists alike. Additionally, the drone's flight path was meticulously planned to avoid drawing attention or causing distractions to drivers below.
The efficiency of the Elios 3 was another standout feature. In just four short flights, the drone successfully mapped the entire length of the bridge. This rapid completion time is crucial for minimizing disruptions in busy urban environments, allowing for timely inspections without inconveniencing commuters.
Accuracy was also a critical factor in this project. The Surveying Payload's Rev 7 LiDAR system captured over 90% of the data with precision down to within 1 cm. This level of detail is essential for identifying structural anomalies and planning maintenance activities. Moreover, the FARO Connect software streamlined the data processing, enabling the creation of a highly accurate 3D model of the bridge.
For Droprise, this project was a pivotal moment in demonstrating the value of cutting-edge drone technology. As a Flyability reseller based in Bruges, Droprise has long been an advocate for innovative inspection solutions. This bridge survey provided tangible proof of how drones can enhance traditional inspection methods, offering clients a safer, faster, and more cost-effective alternative.
Looking ahead, Droprise plans to conduct a follow-up flight, leveraging the Surveying Payload's superior accuracy and the automated georeferencing capabilities of FARO Connect. This next step will further refine the digital model of the bridge, enabling even more precise analysis and planning.
This project not only highlighted the Elios 3's ability to handle complex surveying tasks but also showcased its potential to revolutionize infrastructure management. For Droprise, it was an opportunity to demonstrate the real-world benefits of adopting advanced drone technology. As the demand for efficient and non-disruptive inspection solutions continues to grow, tools like the Elios 3 are proving indispensable in maintaining the integrity of vital structures like bridges.
This survey marks a significant milestone in the integration of drone technology into the field of infrastructure inspection. It underscores the importance of innovation in addressing modern challenges and sets a benchmark for future projects of this nature.
