With its strong scientific research capabilities and advanced forging equipment manufacturing expertise, the China Heavy Machinery Research Institute has established itself as a leading force in the field. Leveraging the technological platform of the State Key Laboratory of Metal Extrusion/Forging, the institute has collaborated with industry leaders such as Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Chongqing University. By integrating multidisciplinary experts and adopting a joint R&D model that combines production, research, and development, it has successfully developed and manufactured a 165MN free-forging hydraulic press with full independent intellectual property rights and cutting-edge international technology. This groundbreaking equipment was officially put into use by Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. in May 2008. The successful development of this machine marks a significant milestone, demonstrating that China's large-scale forging equipment and forgings have reached world-class standards, giving the country a stronger voice in the global industrial landscape. One of the most notable features of the 165MN press is the adoption of a direct-drive hydraulic system, which challenges traditional designs and represents a major breakthrough in China's independent innovation efforts. Designed with a three-beam, four-column, and three-cylinder structure, the press features a fully prestressed frame, four-plane guided movable beam, and a worktable that measures up to 5,000 mm wide. The internal opening is 7,500 mm, and the closed height reaches 8,000 mm. It operates at a maximum pressure of 35 MPa, with a stroke control accuracy of ±1.5 mm. The total height of the press is 24,675 mm, with a ground height of 18,000 mm, and it can handle parts weighing up to 360 tons. The press is equipped with advanced auxiliary systems, including a 2,500 kN/6,300 kN rail-mounted hydraulic operating machine, an ejector, and a rotary lifter, significantly enhancing automation. Its electronic control system uses a programmable controller as the main unit, paired with an industrial computer for human-machine interaction, and includes a local control network for automated system operation, fault diagnosis, and coordination with the operating machine. Drawing on both domestic and international experience, the project incorporated the most advanced technologies and components available. From material selection, smelting, casting, processing, heat treatment, lifting, transportation, installation, and commissioning, the team overcame numerous key technical challenges. This achievement positions China at the forefront of heavy-duty free-forging hydraulic press technology, with high knowledge intensity, value-added, and high-tech characteristics. Throughout the development process, ten national invention patents and utility model patents were obtained. The 165MN press is expected to be installed and commissioned this year, entering the trial production phase. Once operational, it will enable China’s free-forging industry to produce parts with a maximum single capacity of 600 tons, further solidifying its position on the global stage.
