The world's largest tonnage free-forging hydraulic press will be delivered
With its strong scientific research capabilities and advanced manufacturing technology, the China Heavy Machinery Research Institute has established itself as a leading force in the field of heavy machinery. Leveraging the technological platform of the State Key Laboratory of Metal Extrusion/Forging, the institute has partnered with industry leaders such as Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Chongqing University. Through collaborative R&D efforts and the integration of domestic scientific resources, the team successfully developed and manufactured the 165MN free forging equipment, which is fully equipped with independent intellectual property rights and cutting-edge international technology. This groundbreaking machine was officially put into use by Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. in May 2008.
The successful development of this equipment marks a significant milestone for China, demonstrating that its large-scale forging equipment and forgings have reached world-class standards. It grants China a stronger voice in the global industrial landscape.
One of the most notable features of the 165MN hydraulic press is its adoption of a direct-drive hydraulic system, a technology that challenges traditional designs and showcases China's growing capacity for independent innovation. The press features a three-beam, four-column structure with a full prestressed frame, ensuring stability and precision. The movable beam is guided by four planes, while the working table measures up to 5,000 mm wide. With an internal opening of 7,500 mm and a closed height of 8,000 mm, the machine is capable of handling extremely large components.
The hydraulic system is driven directly by oil pumps, utilizing advanced valve control technology with a maximum pressure of 35MPa. The press offers a stroke control accuracy of ±1.5mm, and its total height reaches 24,675 mm, standing 18,000 mm above ground level. It can handle parts weighing up to 360 tons. Additional Auxiliary Equipment, such as a 2,500kN/6,300kN rail-mounted hydraulic operating machine, ejector, and rotary lifter, significantly enhances the machine’s automation level.
The electronic control system uses a programmable controller as the main unit, paired with an industrial computer for human-machine interaction. A local control network enables automatic control, real-time diagnostics, and synchronized operation with the auxiliary machines.
Drawing on both domestic and international experiences, the project incorporated the most advanced technologies and components available. Special attention was given to material selection, smelting, casting, processing, heat treatment, lifting, transportation, installation, and commissioning. This comprehensive approach helped overcome several critical technical challenges, positioning China at the forefront of heavy-duty free-forging hydraulic press technology.
During the development process, ten national invention patents and utility model patents were obtained, highlighting the innovative nature of the project. The 165MN large-scale free-forging hydraulic press is expected to be installed and commissioned this year, entering the trial production phase. Once operational, it will enable China to produce single forgings of up to 600 tons, further solidifying its position as a global leader in heavy forging technology.
