**Guangdong Enterprises Collaborate to Drive the New Energy Appliance Industry** The home appliance industry in Guangdong is making a significant push toward new energy appliances, aiming to strengthen its position in the market and unlock new growth opportunities. Recently, the Guangdong Household Electrical Appliances Chamber of Commerce Committee for New Energy held a meeting with over a dozen member companies, focusing on the development of air-to-water heat pump water heaters. This marks the first time the domestic appliance industry has launched such a coordinated initiative. Xie Desheng, Secretary-General of the Guangdong Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that while maintaining dominance in traditional sectors like air conditioning and color TVs, Guangdong enterprises must seize the high ground in emerging markets to create a "Blue Ocean" for future competition. The goal is to ensure long-term leadership and foster sustainable development. Currently, leading Guangdong-based companies such as Tongyi, Midea, Shenzhen Baomei, Guangzhou Keling, and Dongguan Keyang collectively hold 70% of the domestic air-to-water heater market. This collaboration is expected to significantly influence the evolution of both the local appliance industry and the broader new energy electrical sector. According to Tang Weikui, director of the Guangdong New Energy Appliances Committee, the air-to-water heater market is growing rapidly. In 2006, it was estimated to reach 2 billion yuan, with projections of reaching 80 billion yuan within three years. This represents an annual growth rate exceeding 200%, driven by increasing demand and technological advancements. Energy efficiency is becoming a central theme in both the industry and society. Air-to-water heaters use heat pump technology, converting one unit of electricity into four units of heat, resulting in up to 70% energy savings compared to traditional electric water heaters. This makes them not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. Major companies are now targeting this emerging market. Midea has been particularly proactive, while Haier and Chunlan are also investing heavily in research and development. Even XCMG, known for construction machinery, is exploring entry into the air-to-water heater market, signaling strong potential for growth. To address technical and market challenges, Guangdong enterprises have initiated the establishment of a joint technical development center, aiming to promote innovation, avoid resource duplication, and enhance market competitiveness. Companies like Tongyi, Keling, and Baomei have formed a tripartite alliance to accelerate product development and market expansion. In addition, the government is playing a key role in promoting new energy initiatives. Policies such as the "Notice on Doing Well Recent Work in Building a Conservation-oriented Society" and the "Opinions on the Implementation of Government Procurement of Energy-saving Products" are encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient and new energy appliances. These measures are expected to create a favorable environment for the growth of the industry. New energy refers to low-carbon or carbon-free sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass energy. While solar energy is highly clean, its application is limited by climate and installation conditions. To overcome this, heat pump technology is being used to indirectly harness solar energy, making air-to-water heaters a practical and efficient solution. As the industry continues to evolve, Guangdong’s collaborative efforts and strategic vision position it at the forefront of the new energy appliance revolution, paving the way for a more sustainable and innovative future.
