Successful Application of PCM Large Displacement Screw Pump in China Oilfield

China is currently the world's second-largest oil consumer and the seventh-largest oil producer. To cut production costs and maximize shareholder returns, the three major Chinese oil and gas companies—PetroChina, Sinopec, and CNOOC—are actively seeking cost-effective solutions. During a visit to Daqing Oilfield, Ma Jian, the North Asia Manager of France’s PCM Pump, and Wu Bingchang, the technical director, shared details about the application of large-displacement PCM Screw pumps in the field. ![Figure 1: Field PCM screw pump](image1.jpg) The use of screw pumps in China dates back to the 1980s, but it wasn’t until 2000 that they started being widely adopted in major oil fields. The main goals of introducing screw pumps include reducing overall production costs, especially electricity expenses, which account for nearly 46% of oil production costs according to PetroChina data. Additionally, screw pumps help address challenges like heavy oil cold mining, high sand content, and high gas wells. However, domestic screw pumps still face several issues. These include sucker rod fractures and tripping due to inadequate design and lack of efficient braking systems. Another challenge is low displacement and poor pump efficiency, often caused by substandard stators and limited rotor options. Lastly, unstable pump cycles, ranging from weeks to years, are due to single formulation of stator rubber and improper interference ratios between stator and rotor. In December 2003, PCM’s 600TP600 screw pump was introduced at Daqing Oilfield, marking the first time foreign-made screw pumps were used there. The goal was to replace traditional rod pumps, thus lowering well production costs. Based on Daqing’s well data, the 600TP600 model (500 rpm, 600 m³/day output, 600-meter lift) was selected using PCM’s WINPETRO software. To reduce initial investment, a domestic drive head and motor were paired with a 22 kW power system. ![Figure 2: 600TP600 Screw pump output curve](image2.jpg) During testing, the pump initially delivered 130 m³/day with a 55% efficiency, which customers attributed to pump quality. A stator adaptability test was conducted by sending 500 ml of well fluid to France for analysis. The results showed a +2.2% expansion coefficient and a -4 shore hardness change, indicating good compatibility. PCM experts advised continued operation to allow the stator to fully swell. ![Figure 3: Application of PCM 600TP600 in Venezuela](image3.jpg) Over time, the displacement increased to 180 m³/day after three months and stabilized at 200 m³/day, with efficiency rising to 77%. By April 2006, the well had operated continuously for 840 days, with an estimated operational life of at least one year. When efficiency drops to 50%, PCM plans to upgrade to a larger rotor to further improve performance and extend stator life. ![Figure 4: Application of PCM 600TP600 in Shengli Oilfield](image4.jpg) A comparison of the PCM 600TP600 with a domestically produced GBL800-14 screw pump revealed significant cost savings over two years. The PCM pump saved 108,000 yuan in maintenance, operating fees, and power consumption. Additionally, daily oil production increased by 19.5 m³, generating total benefits of 5.7 million yuan. Overall, PCM screw pumps offer long-term advantages over domestic models, including lower maintenance, reduced energy use, and improved economic returns. Their unique stator formula and optimized rotor selection enhance efficiency and prolong service life, making them a valuable solution for oilfields looking to boost productivity while cutting costs.
