Methanol to propylene industrialization project started

<

On October 18, a groundbreaking industrial pilot project for converting methanol to propylene using fluidized bed technology was officially launched in Huaihe. This initiative is the result of a joint effort between China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation, Tsinghua University, and Anhui Huaihua Group Co., Ltd., a key member of the new-generation coal (energy) chemical industry technology innovation strategic alliance. The project aims to process 30,000 tons of methanol annually, producing approximately 10,000 tons of propylene, along with 800 tons of liquefied petroleum gas. With an estimated total investment of RMB 160 million, the facility is expected to become operational by March 2009. Coal-to-olefin technology represents a crucial advancement in the development of modern coal chemical industries, and it is seen as a vital direction for future growth in this sector. While methanol-to-olefins and methanol-to-propylene technologies have been researched both domestically and internationally, large-scale industrial implementation has yet to be realized. This project seeks to bridge that gap. Building on the foundational research conducted at Tsinghua University, the project has scaled up from small-scale tests to a 10,000-ton level. Through the operation of industrial test equipment, optimization of process parameters, and evaluation of catalyst performance and equipment reliability, the project aims to achieve advanced technological standards and environmental indicators comparable to those seen globally. It will serve as a critical technical foundation and training platform for the upcoming one-million-ton industrial unit. The project is structured into three main components: basic research, industrial scaling, and field testing. Each participating organization contributes its expertise—Tsinghua University leads the small-scale testing in its reaction engineering laboratory, China National Chemical Engineering Group handles the engineering design, and Anhui Huaihua Group constructs the industrial testing facilities. This collaboration forms a comprehensive model of research, design, and production integration. Currently, China Tianchen Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Chemical Engineering Group, has completed the design of the industrial test process package. Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. is now working on the engineering design. With strong local government support, all necessary approvals and filings have been finalized, and construction preparations are well underway.
