Retired Joliet Fire Chief Larry Walsh dies

Larry M. Walsh, the former Fire Chief of Joliet, passed away on September 25, 2013, at the age of 77, surrounded by his loved ones at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Known for his unwavering dedication to public service, Chief Walsh had a remarkable career spanning over three decades with the Joliet Fire Department. His tenure as chief from 1991 to 1998 left an indelible mark on the department, and he was instrumental in establishing the fire science program at Joliet Junior College in 1970, which he coordinated for 25 years. Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich fondly remembered Walsh as someone deeply committed to both the fire service and the community. "He was proud to serve as chief," Randich recalled, emphasizing how Walsh treated every firefighter like family. "Anyone on the department was one of ‘his guys,’ and he made sure we felt cared for." Born on December 27, 1935, in Chicago, Walsh began his military career in the 77th Special Forces before transitioning into firefighting. Outside of his professional achievements, he cherished simple pleasures such as listening to fire sirens, calliope music, and the sounds from his model train layouts. His hobbies included the circus and model railroading, which brought him immense joy throughout his life. Survivors include his devoted wife, Arlene (Schoulda), their four children—Richard, Scott, Barbara, and Lisa—and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, September 29, from 1 to 8 p.m., at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home located at 3200 Black Road, Joliet. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. the next day, with a private burial afterward. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Chief Walsh's memory are encouraged to donate to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s Burn Camp in Mount Prospect, supporting children who have endured severe burn injuries. As a testament to his legacy, Chief Walsh leaves behind not only a family but also countless colleagues whose lives he touched during his illustrious career. His contributions to firefighting education and safety standards will continue to inspire future generations.
