Retired Joliet Fire Chief Larry Walsh dies

<

I just heard the sad news about the passing of Chief Larry Walsh. It feels surreal because he was such a vital part of our community for so long. I remember reading in The Herald-News that he passed away in hospice last week at the age of 77. Larry was a true institution in Joliet, spending 30 years with the fire department, where he served as chief from 1991 to 1998. Not only did he lead the department with dedication, but he also played a key role in establishing the fire science program at Joliet Junior College, which has trained countless firefighters over the years. Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich shared some beautiful words about him, saying how deeply committed Larry was to both the fire service and the city. Ray mentioned that Larry treated everyone like part of his family, always making sure he knew every member of the team and looking out for them. That kind of personal touch really resonated with all of us who worked alongside him. The obituary in the paper provided even more details about his life. Larry was born in Chicago back in 1935 and spent much of his adult life here in Joliet. Before joining the fire department, he had an interesting stint in the 77th Special Forces. Once he transitioned to firefighting, he climbed the ranks until he became chief, retiring after an impressive 12-year career there. Beyond his professional achievements, Larry had a playful side too—loving circuses, trains, and anything involving fire sirens. His funeral is set for Monday at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, and there'll be a visitation this Sunday from 1 to 8 PM. If anyone wants to honor his memory, they're encouraged to donate to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance's Burn Camp instead of sending flowers. It’s heartwarming to see how he continues to inspire even in death, especially through initiatives helping kids recover from burn injuries. It’s hard to sum up someone like Larry Walsh, whose legacy spans generations. He wasn’t just a leader; he was a pillar of support for everyone around him. Rest in peace, Chief Walsh—you’ll truly be missed.
