4-story roof fire in Glenview 5-22-11
On Sunday evening, during a heavy storm after 10 PM, the Glenview 9-1-1 center received multiple calls reporting a fire at 2700 Summit Drive. Firefighters arrived at the four-story L-shaped apartment building to find smoke and flames on the roof. The initial response included Glenview Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, and Glenview Truck 14, which was operating with Engine 8R. Northfield Truck 29 and other units soon followed. As the situation escalated, the alarm was upgraded to Code 4, bringing in additional resources such as Glenview Engine 8, Glenview Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4.
Northbrook Truck 12 had just returned from another Code 4 incident in their area when they were called to this scene. Despite the challenging weather conditions, firefighters quickly deployed their main aerials to the roof, and the fire was contained rapidly to its point of origin. Northbrook Truck 12 was positioned on the northwest side of the building to allow firefighters access to the roof, though the supply to the truck was never charged.
Northfield Truck 29 was the first unit on the scene because Glenview Truck 14 was using a spare engine. This temporary arrangement allowed for continued operations but required careful coordination. Glenview Truck 14's use of Engine 8R provided more compartment space, making it better suited for carrying the necessary equipment.
The damage to the roof was visible, but the fire was extinguished quickly, minimizing structural impact. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene, though there wasn’t much left to see after the rapid knock-down. Larry has a small gallery of images here, capturing the aftermath and the efforts of the responding crews.
Glenview Engine 6 was seen on the scene with their new Pierce Arrow XT engine, showcasing the department’s ongoing investment in modern firefighting technology. The quick response and effective coordination between multiple agencies ensured that the fire was brought under control with minimal disruption.
