CFD Personnel Reorganization – update 2
The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), which oversees the 9-1-1 dispatch center, is set to implement a series of personnel changes that will take effect on January 1, 2012. These adjustments will impact both fire and police communications staff. Among the key changes in the fire department include:
- Four senior alarm board operators will be demoted to the role of dispatcher.
- Two dispatchers will be reclassified as call takers.
- At least five call takers are expected to lose their positions.
Currently, each shift has a senior alarm board operator assigned to both the Englewood and Main operations. Starting January 1st, one individual will be responsible for managing both areas, which could lead to increased workload and potential service delays.
According to a post on the OEMC’s Facebook page, pink slips and demotion notices were handed out to 911 operators on Friday, December 16, 2011. This move has raised concerns among city officials and residents alike.
CBS Chicago reported that Shanita Carter, an OEMC supervisor, expressed worries about the impact of these cuts. She warned that reducing already overworked and understaffed call takers would severely affect emergency response times, especially in high-crime neighborhoods. “That means the city of Chicago is in serious trouble,†she said. “There will be even more delays in service. The supervisors are essential — they train, motivate, and support the call takers. They’re already stretched thin and burned out.â€
Carter emphasized that cutting supervisors would only worsen the situation. Earlier this week, 28 aldermen signed a letter expressing concern over city budget cuts, particularly those affecting the OEMC. They argued that these reductions go too far and could result in the loss of hundreds of jobs across departments, including libraries and other critical services under Mayor Emanuel’s plan.
These changes have sparked widespread debate about the future of emergency services in Chicago and the long-term effects of staffing cuts on public safety.
