4-story roof fire in Glenview 5-22-11

<

On Sunday evening, during a heavy storm after 10 PM, the Glenview 9-1-1 center received multiple calls about a fire at 2700 Summit Drive. When emergency crews arrived at the four-story L-shaped apartment building, they found smoke and flames on the roof. The initial response included Glenview Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, and Glenview Truck 14, which was operating with Engine 8R. Northfield Truck 29 and other units also responded. As the situation developed, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4, bringing in additional resources such as Glenview Engine 8, Glenview Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4. Notably, Northbrook Truck 12 had just returned from another Code 4 incident in their area when this call came in. Northbrook Truck 12 was positioned on the northwest side of the building to allow firefighters access to the roof. However, the supply to the truck was never charged, which is an unusual but critical detail in such situations. Northfield Truck 29 was the first unit on the scene, as Glenview Truck 14 was using a spare engine. This setup allowed for quicker deployment, though it also highlighted the challenges of having to rely on backup equipment during emergencies. Firefighters from both Northbrook and Northfield quickly deployed their main aerials to the roof, and the fire was contained rapidly to its point of origin. The quick response prevented further damage, and by the time photographers arrived, much of the scene had already been cleared. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were among the first to reach the location, capturing the aftermath. Larry has shared a small gallery of images from the event, offering a visual record of the incident. Glenview Engine 6 was seen on the scene using its new Pierce Arrow XT engine, which is equipped with modern technology and improved capabilities. Meanwhile, Glenview Truck 14 continued its operation with Engine 8R, which provides more storage space than the standard reserve unit, making it better suited for carrying essential equipment. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of rapid response, coordination between departments, and the use of well-maintained equipment in emergency situations.
