Technical Innovation of Second Phase of Sewage Treatment Project

<

**Abstract:** The second phase of the Shanghai Sewage Treatment Project is a World Bank-funded initiative aimed at addressing wastewater challenges in several key areas along the upper reaches of the Huangpu River, including Wujing, Minhang, Xuhui, Luwan, and Pudong New Area. After the interception of sewage from Xuhui and Luwan, the combined flow is transported through the Huangpu River, lifted by pumping stations, and directed toward the Bailonggang area near the Yangtze River Estuary. This sewage is then merged with that from Wujing, Minhang, and Pudong before being discharged into the sea after treatment at the plant. **Key words:** Sewage treatment, halfway pumping station, World Bank project The project covers a total service area of 271.7 square kilometers, serving a population of approximately 3.36 million people. The dry-weather sewage flow is around 172 cubic meters per second, while the stormwater interception capacity reaches 29.67 cubic meters per second. The total investment for the project amounts to about 4.8 billion yuan, with 250 million U.S. dollars provided as a World Bank loan. Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute was responsible for designing several critical components, such as the Puxi closure system, the inverted siphon across the Huangpu River, the Pudong South Line, connecting pipelines, and the midway pumping stations (SA and SB). The project began its initial design in 1994, with all construction drawings completed by early 1999 and the project finalized in early 2000. The Midway Pumping Stations, SA and SB, are essential parts of the system. SA Pumping Station, located near the western part of Pudong Yaohua Branch and across the Huangpu River from Longhua Airport, serves six drainage routes in Puxi. It has six pumps, five of which are standby, with a maximum flow of 22.2 cubic meters per second and a lift height of up to 18.8 meters. SB Pumping Station, situated in the Pudong Cambridge Industrial Zone, handles wastewater from SA Pumping Station and other areas. It features six volute mixed-flow pumps, with two operating under variable frequency control, and a total installed power of 8500 kW. The project incorporated numerous innovations, including advanced pump designs, efficient water flow management, and improved structural engineering. For example, the use of non-bonded prestressed concrete in high-level wells reduced cracking issues, while the installation of thrust piers helped manage pipe forces. Additionally, the project introduced energy-efficient systems, such as frequency-controlled motors and closed front ponds to minimize odor emissions. Overall, the Shanghai Sewage Treatment Phase II Project stands as a landmark in urban infrastructure, combining modern technology with practical engineering solutions to improve environmental sustainability and public health.
